Heatwave Red Alert Reaches Abruzzo's Mountain Towns

Italy's health ministry placed 27 cities, from Trieste in the northeast to Palermo in Sicily, on red alert ahead of the weekend as a blistering heatwave across much of Europe toppled temperature records and disrupted energy and transportation systems in several countries, France 24 reported on Friday.

The red alert, the highest level of heat warning, signals conditions that pose a health risk to the entire population, not just the elderly or vulnerable. The affected cities span the country from the Adriatic to the Tyrrhenian, with the alert in force across the weekend.

For Abruzzo, the red alert carries particular weight. While the region is known for its mountain interior and continental climate, the current heatwave is pushing temperatures in inland towns such as L'Aquila, Sulmona, and Avezzano to levels residents associate with the coast or the plains.
