A gruelling heatwave is moving across Western Europe this weekend, with temperatures forecast to reach record levels across much of the continent. France 24 reported Saturday that emergency meetings have been called in France, nationwide warnings issued in Germany, and strains mounting on tourists and residents in Italy as the mercury climbs toward 40°C (104°F).
Alpine regions including Trentino-Alto Adige are among the areas affected by the heat event. The region's economy includes agriculture, wine production, and mountain tourism sectors that could be vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
France 24's reporting suggests the heat event is expected to persist through the coming week, with no immediate relief forecast for the Alps.
