Amatrice Still Waiting: 10 Years On, Reconstruction Lags

As people gather in Amatrice on Monday for a mass to mark the 10th anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the town in 2016, the Guardian reports that anger is mounting over the slow pace of reconstruction. According to the newspaper, as of April two-thirds of planned public projects in Amatrice had yet to begin, rising to seven in 10 in the hardest-hit areas.

The 2016 earthquake struck central Italy on 24 August, killing hundreds and flattening towns across the Apennines, including Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto. A decade later, the Guardian's reporting suggests that many residents still live in temporary accommodation or in homes that have not been fully repaired, and that the promised rebuilding of public infrastructure remains incomplete.
