Amatrice's Slow Reconstruction Stirs Anger Across Italy's Earthquake Belt

As mourners gathered in Amatrice on Monday for a mass marking the 10th anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the town, the Guardian reported that anger is mounting over the slow pace of reconstruction. According to the paper, as of April two-thirds of planned public projects in Amatrice had yet to begin, rising to seven in ten in the hardest-hit areas of the region.

The 2016 earthquake struck central Italy in the early hours of 24 August, killing hundreds of people across a cluster of mountain towns spanning Umbria, Lazio, Marche and Abruzzo. Amatrice, in Lazio, became the symbol of the disaster, its name forever linked to the ruined medieval centre and the pasta dish it gave the world.
