Amatrice Marks 10 Years Since Quake With Reconstruction Still Slow

As residents of Amatrice gathered on Monday for a mass to mark the 10th anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the central Italian town, international reporting has drawn attention to the slow pace of its reconstruction. According to the Guardian, as of April two-thirds of planned public projects in Amatrice had yet to begin, rising to seven in 10 in the hardest-hit areas.

The 2016 earthquake struck on 24 August, killing 299 people and destroying much of the town, which became a symbol of both the disaster and the country's faltering recovery efforts. A decade on, the Guardian reports that anger over the pace of rebuilding remains a central theme for residents who have spent years in temporary accommodation.
