Amatrice marks 10 years since quake as rebuilding lags

Residents of Amatrice gathered on Monday for a mass to mark the tenth anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the central Italian town in August 2016, according to the Guardian. The disaster killed hundreds across the region and reduced much of the historic hilltop settlement to rubble.

The anniversary comes amid persistent anger over the pace of reconstruction. The Guardian reported that, as of April, two-thirds of planned public projects in Amatrice had yet to begin, a figure rising to seven in ten in the hardest-hit areas of the surrounding region.
