Ten Years On, Amatrice Still Waits for Its Reconstruction

As residents of Amatrice gathered on Monday for a mass marking the tenth anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the town, The Guardian reported that two-thirds of planned public projects had yet to begin as of April, rising to seven in ten in the hardest-hit areas.

The 2016 earthquake struck central Italy on 24 August, killing hundreds and levelling entire towns across the Apennines. A decade later, the slow pace of rebuilding has become a symbol of the country's struggles with disaster recovery and bureaucratic inertia.
