Amnesty: Italy's Albania migrant hubs undermine human rights

NGO says conditions in Italian centers should be a 'wake-up call' for EU return hub plans

Amnesty International has condemned Italy's migrant detention centres in Albania, saying the conditions undermine human rights and should serve as a warning for the European Union's plans to externalise border management, according to Politico Europe.

The NGO's report, published Thursday, focuses on the two facilities where Italy has been sending migrants intercepted at sea. The arrangement, a flagship policy of the Italian government, has been touted as a model for the EU, which is exploring similar 'return hubs' in third countries.

Amnesty's findings are a sharp rebuke to that narrative. The organisation said the centres' conditions fall short of international standards and that the policy as a whole erodes the right to asylum.
