Antonelli One Win From F1 Title as Ferrari's Singapore Gamble Backfires

The Italian leads the championship into Austin after Verstappen's lights-to-flag win, while Hamilton apologises for a strategy call that cost Ferrari a double podium

Max Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix from pole on Sunday, leading every lap at Marina Bay ahead of Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli, according to the BBC. It was the Red Bull driver's first victory in the city-state, and his third win in four rounds, a run the BBC's Andrew Benson described as "major momentum".

The result leaves Antonelli, third on the road, one race from a first world title. The Guardian reported the Italian saying he can finally "dare to dream" about the championship, which he can secure at the United States Grand Prix in Austin in late October. The Guardian framed the weekend as one in which the Italian "can win the title in Texas".

The sharper story for Italy sat behind him. Lewis Hamilton apologised to Ferrari after an incorrect strategy call during the race, the BBC reported, a decision its Chequered Flag panel said had thrown away a double podium. Leclerc's second place stood; Hamilton's race did not, and the BBC's post-race analysis asked plainly what went wrong with his and the team's strategy. Ferrari had locked out the second row in qualifying, with Leclerc and Hamilton behind Verstappen, and had run first and second in Friday practice through Russell and Leclerc. The race undid the arithmetic.

For the championship, the shape is now clear. Verstappen's revival is awkward for McLaren rather than for Antonelli, Benson wrote, after a poor Saturday in Singapore left the team unhappy. The BBC's driver ratings called Verstappen "perfect" and Antonelli "hugely mature" — a verdict on a driver managing a title rather than chasing one. The Chequered Flag podcast asked whether Verstappen could convert pole to victory and whether Antonelli would edge closer to the title; both questions were answered within two hours on Sunday.

Austin is the next appointment, and the arithmetic is simple: Antonelli wins the championship if results fall his way in Texas. For Ferrari, the weekend leaves a different ledger — a strategy error admitted by its own driver, a podium lost, and a title race now being decided by a driver in a Mercedes rather than the scarlet cars that filled the rest of the top four on the grid. Italian sport will read the next fortnight through that lens, because the world's back pages already are.
