Italian police recover €10m Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse works

Italian police have recovered three paintings by the French masters Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Matisse that were stolen from the Fondazione Magnani Rocca museum in Mamiano di Traversetolo, near Parma, in March, according to the Guardian. The artworks, valued at a total of more than $10 million, were found five months after the nighttime heist, the New York Times reported.

On Friday, police released new CCTV footage of the theft, showing two masked burglars entering through a window, the Guardian reported. The Italian military police said nine Moldovans are being investigated in connection with the theft, with five arrested, according to Al Jazeera and the New York Times.

The recovery closes a high-profile case that had drawn international attention to the security of Italy's smaller museums, many of which house masterpieces in converted villas and palaces far from the main urban centres.
