The heatwave gripping Europe has reached critical intensity, with France recording its hottest day since measurements began in 1947 and parts of the continent approaching 40 degrees Celsius. The WHO chief warned Wednesday that the continent's leaders must invest in making their health services more climate-resilient, as the heatwave puts people's health at risk. The Guardian reported that forty people drowned across France alone as temperatures soared, while the UK's Met Office forecast highs of 39 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

Basilicata, lying in southern Italy where the Mediterranean climate meets continental conditions, faces particular vulnerability to sustained heat stress. The region's sparse population and aging demographics—combined with a healthcare infrastructure already strained by decades of emigration—leave it exposed to the cascading effects of extreme temperatures. The World Health Organization's call for investment in climate-resilient health services comes as Italy itself placed sixteen cities on red heatwave alert, signalling the severity of conditions across the peninsula.
