Campania hospitals hit hardest as Italy's blood stocks run critically low

Italy's national blood centre has issued an urgent appeal for donors after warning that stocks were running critically low nationwide, with hospitals in Lazio, Campania and Sicily worst affected, according to The Local Italy.

The summer period has traditionally been a difficult time for blood donations in Italy, as regular donors travel or take holidays and collection rates drop just as demand from hospitals continues unabated.

The appeal comes as the country heads into September, a month that typically sees surgical schedules resume in full after the summer slowdown, putting additional pressure on already strained supplies.

The shortfall in Campania is particularly concerning given the region's reliance on its major hospital networks in Naples, including the Cardarelli hospital and the Santobono paediatric centre, which serve a population of nearly six million people. Blood services in the region have struggled in recent years to maintain adequate reserves, with periodic shortages reported during peak demand periods.

The national appeal follows a pattern seen in previous summers across Italy, where holiday-season donations drop by as much as 15 to 20 percent compared with other months. The Local Italy reported that the national blood centre has called on regular donors to come forward as soon as possible, and has encouraged new donors to register.

For Campania, the timing is particularly delicate. The region's hospitals already operate under significant strain, with emergency departments in Naples frequently reported as overcrowded in international coverage. A shortage of blood products adds another layer of risk for patients requiring surgery, trauma care or treatment for blood disorders such as thalassaemia, a condition that affects a significant number of people in southern Italy.

The appeal highlights a recurring challenge for the Italian healthcare system: while the country maintains a robust voluntary blood donation network, seasonal fluctuations and an ageing donor base continue to test the system's resilience. The national blood centre has urged regional authorities to coordinate collection efforts and has asked employers to facilitate donations by allowing staff time off during working hours.

Local health authorities in Campania are expected to organise additional collection drives in the coming weeks, targeting schools, universities and workplaces in Naples and surrounding provinces. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the appeal succeeds in replenishing stocks before the autumn surgical season reaches full capacity.
