Spain's Ceuta border checks reach Molise's summer travellers

Spain has begun imposing temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, a retaliatory move in an escalating dispute between the two EU partners over migration, according to France 24 and Deutsche Welle. The controls follow Italy's decision to impose similar measures after a surge of migrants crossed into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco on July 30-31.

The Italian foreign minister has called Spain's decision "incomprehensible and completely unacceptable," the Guardian reported on Sunday. The checks are affecting people making their way between the two countries, with passport queues and delays now a reality for travellers, as Politico Europe noted the ideological battle over migration policies is spilling into the practicalities of summer travel.

For residents of Molise, the smallest and one of the least-connected regions in Italy, the new checks add another layer of friction to journeys that already require multiple connections. With no major international airport in the region, Molisani typically travel through Rome's Fiumicino or Naples' Capodichino airports to reach Spain, meaning the new controls could catch them at the point of departure or arrival.
