Ceuta Spat Reaches Umbria's Summer Roads

Italy's foreign minister has called Spain's decision to impose retaliatory checks on travellers from Italy "incomprehensible and completely unacceptable", according to the Guardian, as people making their way between the two countries face new delays. Spain began checking travellers from Italy on Saturday in response to similar controls Rome imposed after a surge of migrants into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta.

The European Union says the tit-for-tat border restrictions are temporary and will have no lasting impact on the Schengen zone, France 24 reported. But for inland regions like Umbria, the dispute arrives at the worst possible moment: the peak of the summer travel season, when families from Perugia and the hill towns head to Spanish coasts or host returning relatives.
