Spain has imposed entry checks on travellers arriving from Italy, a retaliatory measure in an escalating diplomatic dispute that began with the Ceuta border rush, according to Deutsche Welle. Madrid had warned Rome that it would introduce the controls unless Italy lifted its own checks by Sunday, and has followed through despite the two countries not sharing a land border.

Italy's foreign minister has condemned the decision as "incomprehensible and completely unacceptable," the Guardian reported, as travellers making their way between the two countries found themselves caught up in the migration row. The checks are disrupting travel during the peak summer holiday season, when millions of Italians typically head to Spanish beaches and resorts.

For Abruzzo, the timing could hardly be worse. The region's Adriatic coast has been enjoying a strong summer season, with hotels and beach clubs reporting high occupancy.
