Spain has set up border controls on travelers arriving from Italy, according to Deutsche Welle, after Madrid warned Rome it would impose entry checks unless Italy halted its own controls by Sunday. The two countries do not share a land border, making the measure a symbolic but pointed escalation in a dispute that began with the Ceuta border rush.

The row stems from a migrant influx at Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, where tens of thousands of people swam from Morocco in a mass crossing. The Guardian's analysis noted the episode prompted recriminations and a tit-for-tat dispute between Italy and Spain, with both governments trading accusations over who bore responsibility for the surge.

For Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the dispute carries particular weight. Trieste sits at the crossroads of Italy's eastern border with Slovenia, a frontier that has historically been a flashpoint for migration and border politics.
