Ceuta border spat reaches Italy, testing summer travel

Spain has set up border controls on travellers arriving from Italy, Deutsche Welle reported on Saturday, in an escalation of a dispute between the two EU member states over the recent migrant rush at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The move comes after Madrid warned Rome it would impose entry checks unless Italy halted its own controls by Sunday.

The two countries do not share a land border, making the imposition of checks on Italian travellers a symbolic but pointed act. The dispute follows a surge of migrants swimming from Morocco to Ceuta, which prompted recriminations between Madrid and Rome over how to handle the influx.

For the Veneto region, the timing could hardly be worse. Mid-August is the peak of the Italian summer travel season, when thousands of Venetians and other northern Italians head abroad — many of them to Spain. Any additional friction at borders, even without a shared frontier, risks complicating the holiday plans of a region whose economy depends heavily on tourism and free movement.
