Ceuta border spat reaches Naples: passport checks hit Campania travellers

Spain's decision to impose retaliatory border checks on travellers from Italy is now reaching Campania's ports and airports at the height of the summer season, according to the Guardian and France 24. The move follows Italy's introduction of similar controls after a surge of migrants crossed into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. Spain's foreign ministry said the checks would remain until Rome halts its own measures, with the European Union insisting the tit-for-tat restrictions are temporary and will have no lasting impact on the Schengen zone.

For Campania, the timing could not be worse. The region's airports and ferry terminals are the gateway for hundreds of thousands of summer travellers, many of them heading to Spain or connecting through it to other destinations. The Spanish checks mean longer queues, missed connections and a new layer of friction for a region that depends on tourism revenue to sustain its fragile economy. Politico Europe reported that the ideological battle between Spain and Italy over migration is spilling into passport queues and exposing the fragility of Europe's free-travel area.
