Ceuta border spat puts Milan's fashion week travel at risk

Spain on Saturday introduced temporary border checks on travellers arriving from Italy, escalating a dispute between the EU partners over migration. The move follows Italy's decision to impose similar controls after more than 70,000 migrants crossed into Spain's Ceuta enclave from Morocco, most of whom later returned, France 24 reported.

The checks, which apply to flights and ships from Italy from midnight on Saturday until September 7, come amid a rare spat between the two EU nations. Politico Europe reported that Italy's government says it will continue its temporary suspension of Schengen until at least Aug. 15, rejecting Spain's ultimatum to halt the controls by Sunday.

For Milan, the timing is awkward. The city's fashion calendar — home to Gucci, Prada and Armani — relies on a steady flow of international talent and buyers, including a significant contingent from Spain. The border checks, even if temporary, add friction to a season that is already compressed and competitive.
