Ceuta fall-out reaches Tuscany's summer roads

A diplomatic dispute over migration that began at Ceuta has escalated into a practical headache for travellers crossing between Italy and Spain, just as Tuscany's summer season reaches its peak. According to the Guardian, Spain has introduced checks on visitors from Italy in retaliation for Rome's own controls, a move Italy's foreign minister called "incomprehensible and completely unacceptable."

The row was triggered by the migrant influx at Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on Morocco's coast, which prompted recriminations between Rome and Madrid. Deutsche Welle reports that Spain had warned Italy it would impose entry checks unless Rome halted its controls by Sunday. Even though the two countries do not share a land border, the checks are now being applied to travellers arriving by air and sea.

For Tuscany, the timing is awkward. August is the region's busiest month, when foreign visitors — many of them Spanish and French — drive through the hills between Florence and Siena or take ferries to the Tyrrhenian coast. The new checks add friction to a journey that is already slow in peak season, and they come as the region's tourism economy is counting on a strong summer.
