Italy's temporary suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain, following the migration episode in Ceuta, is being presented less as a meaningful European policy than as a symbol of the political use of immigration, according to France 24. The broadcaster's interview with Dr. Manlio Graziano, founder and director of the Nicholas Spykman International Center for Geopolitical Analysis, highlights how immigration is being used as a 'political tool' across the political spectrum in the EU.

The measure, which impacts people travelling by plane or boat between Italy and Spain, was announced after as many as 60,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, as The Guardian reported. The Guardian's coverage noted that Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez decried a 'violation of territorial integrity' as other EU countries criticised Madrid over the incident.
