Italy's Schengen Suspension with Spain: What It Means for Riviera Travel

Italy has chosen to temporarily suspend Schengen rules with Spain following recent events in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, The Local Italy reported this week. The move reimposes border controls between the two countries for a set period, affecting travellers who cross between them during the peak summer season.

For Liguria, the suspension carries immediate practical consequences. The region's position on the western Riviera places it on the route between the French border and Genoa, and the ports of Savona and Imperia handle significant passenger traffic from both France and Spain during August. The reintroduction of checks means longer queues at crossing points and additional documentation requirements for those moving between the two countries.

The suspension follows a migration episode in Ceuta in which at least 72 people are believed to have died, most of them drowned or crushed attempting to cross the border, according to the Guardian's reporting. The EU's top migration official has criticised Spain's plan to regularise undocumented migrants, calling it 'not a good signal' for Europe, the paper reported.
