Recovered Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse Works Put Regional Heritage in Focus

Italian police have recovered three paintings by Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Matisse that were stolen from the Fondazione Magnani Rocca museum in Mamiano di Traversetolo, near Parma, in March, according to the Guardian. The artworks, valued at a total of more than $10 million, were found five months after the nighttime heist, the New York Times reported, citing the Italian military police.

On Friday, police released new CCTV footage of the theft, showing two masked burglars entering through a window and grabbing the paintings, the Guardian reported. Five accused thieves are now under arrest, CBS News said, after police said they took the works from the private museum housed in an Italian villa.

The recovery closes a five-month investigation that began with a March break-in at the foundation, a private collection set in the Parmense countryside. The Guardian noted the works were stolen from the Magnani Rocca Foundation, a museum known for housing a significant assembly of modern art in a villa surrounded by parkland.
