Chinese EV surge tests Liguria's port logistics

Chinese electric car sales have risen across Europe to a record high, driven by strong demand and low tariffs in the UK and a surge in buyers in Italy, according to The Guardian. Imports now account for 14% of the European market, up from a smaller share a year ago, amid claims that vehicles are being dumped in the EU and UK.

For Liguria, the surge has a direct logistical dimension. The port of Genoa is one of the primary entry points for vehicles arriving by sea from Asia, and the increase in EV shipments is putting new pressure on its container terminals and roll-on/roll-off facilities. Port operators are having to manage larger volumes of high-value cargo, which requires more storage space and faster turnaround times.

The tariff debate adds another layer of uncertainty. The Guardian reported that the rise in Chinese EV sales comes against a backdrop of claims that cars are being sold below cost, which has prompted calls for the EU to impose stricter duties. Any change in tariff policy could reshape the flow of vehicles through Genoa, either reducing volumes or redirecting them to other ports.
