In the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy's so-called "Food Valley," researchers are working on the pasta of the future by focusing on its main ingredient: wheat, according to a report by France 24. The work comes as Italy endures its fourth heatwave of the summer, which has pushed temperatures in some areas close to 40C and placed all 27 major cities under the highest heat alert, as The Guardian reported this week.

The France 24 report highlights how technology is being used to improve the iconic Italian dish, with scientists concentrating on developing wheat varieties that can withstand the increasing climate stress affecting agriculture across the Mediterranean basin.
