Etna's Ash Shuts Catania Airport, and the South's Air Links Shift Again

Sicily's Catania airport suspended air traffic on Monday, September 14, as nearby Mount Etna spewed volcanic ash, The Local Italy reported. The airport is the busiest on the island and the main arrival point for eastern Sicily.

Etna is among the most active volcanoes in Europe, and ash plumes have repeatedly forced the airport to close in recent years, usually for hours rather than days. Each closure ripples outward: aircraft and crews are displaced, and connecting passengers across the south are rebooked or stranded.

The disruption is a reminder of how few alternatives the region has. Catania handles the bulk of eastern Sicilian traffic, and when it stops, the nearest substitutes are Comiso and Palermo, both of which require overland travel.
