An American tourist has died after being struck by lightning on Mount Etna, according to multiple international reports. The 29-year-old man was hiking in an area closed to visitors because of recent volcanic activity when a thunderstorm developed on Sunday afternoon, the Guardian reported. Rescuers found him in serious condition on the volcano's eastern slope and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Catania, the New York Times added.

The incident comes as Etna's ongoing eruption has drawn crowds of tourists eager to witness the spectacle, despite safety warnings from local guides. Euronews reported that the eruption has sent plumes into the sky and forced authorities to close Catania Airport, disrupting travel during the peak summer holiday season. The volcano, Europe's tallest active one, has become a magnet for visitors even as authorities restrict access to the most dangerous zones.

For the regions of the Italian South that live in the shadow of such natural forces, the death is a grim reminder of the balance between the economic pull of tourism and the real dangers of the landscape. Italy's volcanoes are not just scenic backdrops; they are active, unpredictable forces that shape both the land and the lives of those who depend on it.
