EU chief urges united border action as Ceuta crisis strains Schengen

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has called for "united action" on border security after a migrant rush on Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta triggered a public spat between Madrid and several European partners, according to The Local Italy. In a letter to Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez, von der Leyen said more must be done to strengthen the European Union's borders at critical points, the Guardian reported.

The appeal comes after Italy announced it was temporarily suspending the Schengen arrangement with Spain, a measure affecting people travelling by plane or boat between the two countries. The decision followed an influx that Spain's prime minister described as a "violation of territorial integrity," with as many as 50,000 migrants entering the tiny territory from Morocco and at least 57 people dying in the attempt, according to the Guardian.

The episode has exposed divisions within the EU over migration policy, with a majority of member states calling for emergency talks on the sudden inflow. Von der Leyen's letter appears aimed at steering the debate toward a common response rather than bilateral recriminations.
