Nine EU Countries Delay EES Border Checks Again, and the Adriatic Watches

Nine European Union countries have again postponed implementation of the Entry/Exit System, the biometric border-check regime meant to register non-EU travellers, according to the Guardian. France, Greece, Portugal and Italy are among the holiday destinations that have asked for more time to install and staff the system at busy airports.

The Guardian reported the delay on 14 September, framing it around the pressure the changes place on airports in peak season. The EES replaces passport stamping with digital registration of short-stay visitors from outside the EU, and its rollout has slipped repeatedly.

The Marche's stake in this is coastal and seasonal. The region's economy leans on summer tourism along the Adriatic, and on the ferries and marinas that serve it, though no source in today's wire names the Marche or its ports in connection with the delay.
