Suspected attacks on supermarket refrigeration in at least nine countries prompt an EU warning over the bloc's food supply chain

Italy's government held emergency talks with its intelligence chiefs on Tuesday after a suspected cyber-attack disrupted supermarket freezer systems in at least nine European countries, The Local Italy reported. The outlet said the European Union had warned that the incident appeared to be a deliberate attempt to disrupt the bloc's food supply chain.
The BBC, which put the number of affected countries at ten, reported that supermarkets had logged problems from Estonia and Sweden to Portugal and Italy, and that many retailers were forced to discard food. Neither account named a perpetrator, described the method of intrusion, or explained the gap between the two counts.
Emilia-Romagna's exposure to that kind of disruption is structural. The plain's food economy runs on cold — dairy, cured meats, packed produce, frozen preparations — and on the machinery cluster around Bologna that builds and services the equipment those plants use. A failure of refrigeration in that chain is at minimum a food-safety question and a write-off of stock.
