Cyberattacks on supermarket refrigeration systems have struck at least 10 European countries, from Estonia and Sweden in the north to Portugal and Italy in the south, the BBC reported. Many retailers have been forced to discard perishable goods as freezers failed or came offline. The coordinated nature of the attacks—spanning multiple nations and affecting critical food-supply infrastructure—has triggered alarm among European governments.
The attacks underscore vulnerabilities in Europe's supply chains at a moment when food security and energy resilience have become geopolitical concerns. Italy, as a major food exporter and importer, depends on continuous cold-chain logistics to move products from production to retail and across borders. Disruption to freezer systems threatens not only consumer access but also the export reputation of Italian food producers—a cornerstone of the country's soft power and a significant share of its trade balance.
