Adriatic braces as European heatwave peaks at 40°C

Marche's summer economy faces strain as France restricts events and Italy enters critical heat phase

France has placed more than a third of the country under a red heat alert and cancelled outdoor sports events as temperatures approach 42°C, according to the Guardian. Authorities have also restricted alcohol consumption at summer music festivals across the country. The heatwave is sweeping much of Europe, with the BBC and France 24 reporting that temperatures are set to hit 40°C across the continent, straining both residents and tourists.

For the Adriatic coast, the timing compounds the pressures of peak summer tourism. Marche's beach resorts and coastal towns typically see their busiest weeks from late June onward, when families and international visitors arrive for the summer season. The combination of record heat and crowded beaches tests both the region's infrastructure and its workforce, particularly in hospitality and water-related services.
