A ferocious heatwave is gripping western and central Europe, with authorities in France placing more than a third of the country under red heat alert and issuing warnings across Italy and Spain. According to the BBC and the Guardian, temperatures in some regions are forecast to exceed 42°C from Monday onwards, with France expected to see peaks near 44°C as the conditions intensify through the week. The sustained heat has prompted the cancellation of outdoor sports events and music festivals, and authorities have restricted alcohol consumption at public gatherings.

The scale of the heatwave has already claimed lives. The Guardian reported that two children, aged four and two, were found dead in their family's car in south-eastern France as the extreme temperatures took hold. The deaths underscore the acute danger posed by the sustained heat across a broad swathe of Europe, with health authorities warning that the coming days present particular risk to vulnerable populations including the elderly, the very young and those with existing health conditions.
