Europe's brutal heatwave tests Sardinia's summer season

As temperatures soar across the continent, the island's tourism economy faces pressure from heat alerts and shifting visitor patterns.

France has placed more than a third of the country under a red heat alert and cancelled outdoor sports events as temperatures approach 42°C, according to the Guardian. The heatwave is now spreading across much of Western Europe, with authorities in Germany issuing nationwide warnings and record temperatures expected to reach 40°C in multiple regions. Italy, including its southern coastal regions, is experiencing the same extreme conditions that have prompted emergency protocols across the continent.

For Sardinia, the timing coincides with the peak of the summer tourism season. The island's economy depends heavily on coastal and resort tourism, particularly the luxury market around the Costa Smeralda. Extreme heat creates dual pressures: it strains the infrastructure and services that support the visitor economy—water supplies, energy grids, transportation—while also deterring some tourists from outdoor activities during the hottest hours. France 24 reported that the heatwave is straining both tourists and residents across Italy, with authorities ramping up warnings and emergency measures.

The interior of Sardinia, already experiencing demographic challenges as younger residents migrate toward coastal areas and the mainland, faces additional strain during heat events. Rural communities with limited cooling infrastructure and healthcare resources become vulnerable during sustained extreme temperatures. The contrast between the climate-controlled luxury resorts of the north and the fragile economies of the shepherd and agricultural communities inland underscores a broader island vulnerability: prosperity concentrated in tourism leaves the interior exposed when environmental conditions shift.
