For Trentino-Alto Adige, the warning carries particular weight. The region sits astride the Brenner corridor, the main north-south route linking Italy to Austria and northern Europe through the Alps. Holiday traffic heading toward the Dolomites and onward across the Brenner Pass is expected to converge with freight traffic on the A22 motorway, a route that has long been a flashpoint in debates over alpine transit.

The Local Italy did not specify which motorways would be most affected, but the Ferragosto weekend historically strains the entire national network. The forecast arrives as parts of Italy continue to swelter under a record August heatwave, which The Local Italy reported may be nearing its end in the coming days.
