Ferragosto traffic tests Marche's coastal arteries

Italy is bracing for some of the heaviest traffic of the summer as the Ferragosto holiday weekend gets underway, according to warnings from the country's motorway operator reported by The Local Italy. The coming days are expected to see intense congestion on major routes as millions of Italians travel for the August 15 national holiday, the peak of the summer season. The motorway operator's forecasts point to particular pressure on the main north-south corridors that carry holiday traffic to and from the country's beaches and mountains.

For the Marche, the Ferragosto rush is a familiar annual test. The region's Adriatic coast, with its long stretches of beach resorts from Gabicce Mare in the north to San Benedetto del Tronto in the south, draws visitors from across central and northern Italy, many of them travelling on the A14 motorway that runs the length of the region. The Local Italy's report did not single out specific routes, but the A14 is the principal artery for coastal traffic in the Marche, and the weekend's congestion is likely to be felt along its length.

The holiday weekend also marks the climax of the summer tourism season that is central to the coastal economy. Hotels and beach establishments along the Riviera del Conero and the Palm Riviera typically report their fullest bookings of the year around Ferragosto, and the movement of visitors places strain not only on the motorways but on the regional rail network and the secondary roads that connect the coastal towns to the inland hill villages.
