Ferrari admits 'must do better' after errors cost victory in Hungary

Ferrari must "do better" after a series of errors at the Hungarian Grand Prix cost the team a potential victory, according to the BBC's analysis of the race on Sunday.

Lando Norris claimed his first grand prix win of the season for McLaren, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and fifth respectively — a result the BBC described as "Ferrari floundering" despite the car appearing to be the fastest in practice.

The BBC's F1 correspondent Andrew Benson wrote that Norris and McLaren were "almost perfect" while mistakes piled up for the Scuderia. A separate BBC report on Monday quoted the team acknowledging: "Ferrari must 'do better' after errors in Hungary."

The Hungarian round was seen as a key test for Ferrari's 2026 challenger, which had shown strong pace in the previous races. According to the BBC, the team looked like "the car to beat" in Friday practice, but strategy calls and driver errors during the race saw them slip behind McLaren and Red Bull.

Leclerc's race was compromised by a slow pit stop, while Hamilton struggled with tire management in the closing stages. The result leaves Ferrari further adrift in the constructors' championship as the season approaches its midpoint.

The BBC's report noted that the team's inability to convert practice speed into race results has been a recurring theme this year, raising questions about operational discipline at Maranello. Team principal Fred Vasseur was quoted by the broadcaster as saying the squad needed to "analyse everything" and return stronger in the next round at Spa-Francorchamps.

For Hamilton, in his first season with Ferrari after leaving Mercedes, the Hungarian GP underlined the challenge of integrating into a new team. The seven-time world champion remains without a win in red, while Leclerc continues to wait for a home victory that has eluded him since 2024.
