Freezer Cyberattacks Hit Nine Countries; Rome Summons Intelligence Chiefs

Retailers from Estonia to Portugal found freezer systems down as Rome met intelligence chiefs and the EU warned of an attack on the food chain

Supermarket freezer systems in at least nine European countries were disrupted on Monday in what is being treated as a cyber-attack, with retailers from Estonia and Sweden to Portugal and Italy reporting failures and many forced to throw food away, the BBC reported. The Local Italy reported that the Italian government held emergency talks with the country's intelligence chiefs on Tuesday, the first official response to an incident that reached the refrigerated aisles of the continent's grocery chains.

The European Union's reading of the event is the sharpest element in the coverage. According to The Local Italy, Brussels warned of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the bloc's food supply chain, language that turns a run of broken freezer cabinets into a question of food security rather than retail information technology. The BBC's geography, Estonia and Sweden at one end and Portugal and Italy at the other, describes a disruption that took no notice of the internal market's borders.

The reporting is not yet consistent on scale. The BBC's headline put the number of affected countries at ten while its text named four; The Local Italy said at least nine. None of the outlets cited identified the software or the supplier involved, named a suspect, or put a figure on the food discarded.
