Freezer Cyber-Attacks Reach Italy, and Rome Calls In Intelligence

The EU called the disruption a deliberate attempt to interfere with the food supply chain; Rome met its intelligence chiefs on Tuesday

Supermarket freezer systems were disrupted in at least nine European countries this week in what the European Union called a suspected deliberate attempt to interfere with the bloc's food supply chain, The Local Italy reported. The BBC said stores from Estonia and Sweden to Portugal and Italy had logged problems, and that many retailers were forced to discard food. The two accounts differ on the count: the BBC put the number of affected countries at ten, while The Local Italy said at least nine.

Italy's response was immediate. The government held emergency talks with the intelligence services on Tuesday, according to The Local Italy, a day after the disruptions were recorded. Neither outlet named a suspected author, described how the freezer systems were reached, or said how many Italian stores were affected.

What the EU's warning establishes is the target rather than the method: commercial refrigeration, the least visible and most perishable part of grocery retail. The BBC's account dwells on the physical result — food thrown out, counters cleared — rather than on any demand or claim of responsibility, and neither report connects the incident to a known campaign.
