Freezer Cyber-Attacks Across Europe Prompt Italy Security Talks
Groceries from Estonia to Portugal reported failures, and the EU warned of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain

Supermarket freezer systems failed in at least nine European countries this week in what is suspected to be a co-ordinated cyber-attack, and Italy's government responded by convening its intelligence chiefs. The Local Italy reported the emergency talks on Tuesday, saying they followed disruptions to grocery refrigeration in at least nine countries a day earlier. The BBC put the number at ten, with problems reported from Estonia and Sweden to Portugal and Italy.
Neither account named a suspect or described the technique used against the refrigeration equipment, and neither said how many individual stores were affected. The practical result was consistent across both: the BBC reported that many retailers were forced to discard food. The gap between nine countries and ten is a measure of how quickly the picture was still moving as the reports were filed.
The European Union went further than either national account, warning of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the bloc's food supply chain, as The Local Italy reported. Failures across ten countries in a single day are difficult to read as coincidence, and the language from Brussels reflects that reading. What remains unstated, in every version of the story, is who is behind it and what they sought.
