Greece's migration minister Thanos Plevris told private broadcaster Action 24 on Monday that criticism from the United Nations and Amnesty International represented a 'badge of honour', according to the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press. He vowed to further tighten what he described as 'the toughest — if not the toughest — in Europe' migration policies, signalling that Athens intends to maintain and deepen its restrictive stance on arrivals across the Aegean Sea.

The Greek hardline comes as the European Union's migration framework continues to shift toward deterrence and enforcement. Reuters and other international outlets have documented how tighter controls in Greece, combined with similar measures across the Balkans and central Europe, have historically redirected migrant and refugee flows toward alternative routes—chiefly the central Mediterranean corridor that terminates on Italian shores, particularly in Sicily and Calabria.
