Hamilton Apologises to Ferrari as Antonelli Nears the Title

A wrong strategy call in Singapore cost Ferrari a double podium; Verstappen won, and the championship maths now favour Antonelli in Austin.

Lewis Hamilton apologised to Ferrari after the Singapore Grand Prix, according to BBC Sport, following a strategy call the team's own driver described as incorrect. Max Verstappen won the race for Red Bull, his first in Singapore, ahead of Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli. The BBC's Chequered Flag team framed the Ferrari decision bluntly: they had thrown away a double podium.

The championship consequence is now arithmetic. The BBC reported that Antonelli, who finished third, can win the world title at the next race in Austin. Verstappen's victory, his first at a circuit that had resisted him, keeps the fight open but shifts the burden onto the Mercedes side of the garage to close it out.

Ferrari's weekend had begun well. Verstappen beat both Ferraris to pole in Saturday qualifying, with Leclerc and Hamilton lining up behind him, and the BBC's Andrew Benson wrote that Verstappen was building major momentum while no-one at McLaren was very happy after a poor Saturday. By Sunday evening the Italian team's problem was not raw pace but the decision made in the pit wall, which the BBC's analysts treated as the decisive variable of the race.

Hamilton's public apology is the detail the foreign press has fastened on, and it is a notable one for a driver of his experience. The BBC's post-race discussion, led by Harry Benjamin, Alice Powell and Alisha Palmowski, examined what went wrong with both his and Ferrari's strategy rather than the pace of the car. That distinction matters for how the result is read abroad: not a slow Ferrari, but a misjudged one.

The driver ratings published by BBC Radio 5 Live after the race described Verstappen as perfect and Antonelli as hugely mature, a pairing of judgements that captures the shape of the season. One driver is winning races; the other is not losing championships. For a Mercedes operation that has spent the year managing a young leader rather than chasing outright speed, that is the more valuable quality.

Austin now carries the season's decisive weight. If Antonelli closes the title there, the Singapore weekend will be remembered abroad as the race Ferrari gave away rather than the race Red Bull won — a reading that will follow the team through the winter regardless of what the final standings say.
