Heatwave Red Alert Reaches Basilicata as Italy Swelters

Italy's health ministry placed 27 cities, from Trieste in the northeast to Palermo in Sicily, on red alert ahead of the weekend as a blistering heatwave across much of Europe toppled temperature records and disrupted energy and transportation systems, France 24 reported on Friday. The alert covers major urban centres, but the same weather system is pressing down on the rural interior of the south, where Basilicata's agriculture and water supplies face their own strain.

The heat has set a national temperature record in Austria, fueled wildfires in France, and disrupted energy and transportation systems across the continent, CBS News reported. In Italy, temperatures across much of the country are approaching or exceeding those recorded during the infamous summer of 2003, as heatwaves become more frequent, according to The Local Italy.

For Basilicata, a region of 537,000 people with a continental climate in its mountains and Mediterranean conditions on its coasts, the heat is not merely a comfort issue. The region's agriculture — a mainstay of its economy alongside oil and gas — depends on water reserves that dwindle under prolonged high temperatures, and the red alert signals a season of potential harvest stress.
