Heatwave Grips Umbria as Europe Swelters

Europe is in the grip of its latest heatwave, with areas home to at least 92 million people — particularly in France, Italy, and Spain — set for temperatures over 35C on Wednesday, according to AFP calculations reported by The Local Italy. The prolonged heat is the fourth such event of the summer, following a series of scorching spells that have tested the continent's infrastructure and water supplies.

For Umbria, the heat arrives as a slow, persistent pressure on the region's hill towns and agricultural valleys. While the coastal plains and major cities draw headlines, the inland interior — with its medieval stone towns and olive groves — absorbs the heat differently, the stone retaining warmth long after sunset and the dry earth hardening under the sun.

The heatwave compounds a summer already marked by drought in northern Italy, where the Po River has fallen to historically low levels, exposing wide stretches of dry riverbed near Pavia and raising fresh concerns over water supplies and farming, as Euronews reported. Umbria, though not on the Po, shares the same climate pressures that have left much of the peninsula parched.
