Hyatt is opening three hotels across Italy by 2028, adding 428 rooms to its portfolio, according to Hospitality Net. The expansion marks the debut of both the Hyatt Regency and Thompson Hotels brands in Italy and includes a property in Taormina, on Sicily's northeastern coast. The move signals that major US hospitality chains see opportunity in Italy's tourism recovery after years of pandemic disruption and ongoing infrastructure strain.

Taormina, perched above the Ionian Sea with views of Etna, has long attracted international visitors and serves as a gateway to Sicily's cultural and natural heritage. The addition of a Thompson property—a luxury brand pitched at affluent travellers—reflects foreign confidence that the island can sustain premium accommodation alongside its existing mid-range and boutique offerings. Sicily draws roughly 4.8 million visitors annually and competes with other Mediterranean destinations for international leisure and business travel.
