Italian manufacturers signalled a boost in demand linked to safety stockpiling, according to the latest PMI data released by S&P Global on Monday. Renewed growth in new orders fuelled a faster expansion in manufacturing output, marking a shift from the prolonged weakness that has characterised the sector through much of 2025 and early 2026.
The data suggests that factories across the country are responding to a pickup in client demand, with the purchasing activity accelerating alongside the expansion in output. S&P Global's purchasing managers' index, a closely watched barometer of manufacturing health, reflected this momentum across the Italian industrial base.
For Lombardia, Italy's manufacturing heartland and home to advanced production in pharmaceuticals, machinery and automotive components, the rebound carries particular weight. The region accounts for roughly a quarter of Italian manufacturing output, and the PMI signal of renewed orders suggests that the safety stockpiling dynamic is reaching the northern factories that supply both domestic and European clients.
