Italy's 2027 Budget Leans on Tax Breaks for the Young

Lower taxes for young professionals and health subsidies for the over-75s were expected in the draft ministers were to approve on Wednesday.

Ministers were expected on Wednesday to approve Italy's 2027 budget, with lower taxes for young professionals and healthcare subsidies for the over-75s among the measures, The Local reported. The two proposals sit at opposite ends of the same demographic ledger. One is meant to keep people in work; the other is meant to keep them cared for.

That ledger is the one foreign coverage of Italy returns to most often: a population of roughly 59 million and ageing, a low birth rate and a steady emigration of the young. A budget that lightens the tax bill for younger earners while supporting the oldest citizens answers both halves of it, at least on paper.

The wire gives no figure for the cost of either measure and no account of how they would be funded. Nor does it say whether the relief for young professionals is temporary or written into the tax code, which is the difference between a gesture and a policy.
