Italy Calls for Independent European Defence as NATO Strains

Defence minister Crosetto argues EU must reduce reliance on US; Molise's military bases face new strategic pressure

Italy's defence minister Guido Crosetto told the New York Times that European nations should forge a new joint defence system and take greater responsibility for their own security. The statement represents a significant shift in Italian strategic thinking, moving away from the post-Cold War assumption that American military umbrella would remain fixed over Europe indefinitely.

Crosetto's argument rests on a simple observation: the United States, under its current administration, has signalled that European defence is a European problem. The Trump presidency has questioned NATO's value, demanded higher contributions from allies, and suggested that America might not automatically defend Europe in a crisis. For Italy, a NATO member since 1952 and host to substantial American military infrastructure, the message carries particular weight.

The call for European autonomy reflects anxieties that have accumulated over years of American political volatility and strategic unpredictability. Italy, like other European nations, has invested heavily in NATO integration and American security guarantees. A sudden withdrawal or retrenchment would leave the continent exposed to Russian pressure, particularly in the Mediterranean and the Balkans, where Italian interests are substantial.
