Red alert across Italy's cities as heatwave deepens island drought

The heat has set a national temperature record in Austria, fueled wildfires in France and disrupted energy and transportation systems across the continent, CBS News reported. The Local Italy asked whether summer 2026 could be Italy's hottest on record, noting that temperatures across much of the country are approaching or exceeding those recorded during the infamous summer of 2003, as heatwaves become more frequent.

For Sardinia, the red alert is not just a city-level concern. The island's interior, already prone to drought, faces increased pressure on water resources and a heightened risk of wildfires, a recurring theme in the island's summer. The heatwave adds to the strain on a fragile environment that the foreign press has long documented.
