Japanese beetle advances through Alpine vineyards and orchards

The invasive pest threatens Trentino-Alto Adige's apple and wine economy as it spreads north from Valle d'Aosta.

Japanese beetles have reached the Valle d'Aosta region, marking a significant northward expansion of the invasive pest across Italy's Alpine agricultural belt. According to AP News, the beetles (Popillia japonica) were documented in July consuming vine leaves in Pont-Saint-Martin, in the Valle d'Aosta region. The spread threatens not only Valle d'Aosta's wine production but also the apple orchards of neighbouring Trentino-Alto Adige, which depends on fruit cultivation as a pillar of its regional economy.

The pest's arrival in the Alps comes as farmers across northern Italy report mounting frustration with crop damage. AP News quoted Vittorio Costabloz, vice-president of a local agricultural association, describing the beetles' impact on vineyards and the broader economic consequences for the region. Japanese beetles, native to North America, feed voraciously on foliage and are difficult to control once established in a new territory. Their presence in the high valleys of Valle d'Aosta suggests the pest has overcome the Alpine barrier that previously isolated southern European agriculture from invasive species moving northward through the continent.

The beetle's appearance in the Valle d'Aosta region is particularly significant for Trentino-Alto Adige, which lies directly to the east and shares similar Alpine topography, climate and agricultural infrastructure. The region's apple sector—among Italy's largest—has already faced pressure from climate volatility and labour shortages; a sustained Japanese beetle infestation could compound these stresses. Trentino-Alto Adige's wine production, centred in the Adige Valley, would face similar risk if the beetles continue their northward march.

The timing of the beetle's Alpine advance reflects broader patterns in European agriculture: warming temperatures are allowing invasive species to establish themselves at higher altitudes and latitudes. Climate researchers have documented that northern Italy is warming faster than much of Europe, a factor that may be facilitating the beetle's survival through Alpine winters. The pest's confirmed presence in Valle d'Aosta suggests that regional authorities in Trentino-Alto Adige may need to prepare monitoring and containment strategies before the beetles reach their orchards and vineyards in significant numbers.
